[1] We know that drill collars are not made of gold, there is no silver or thorium chloride mud.  These are used in the examples to emphasize the fact that the charts are illustrations of the technique, not the response that is actually in the gamma correction software.  That response is proprietary and a trade secret, and only available through licensing the gamma correction software.
